Thinking of Buying a New Camera
« on: July 12, 2011, 12:00:58 PM »

So I was thinking of my next big purchase, and I used to always saved for a new guitar but I think I'm satisfied on that front for now. I then moved onto photography and podcasting, so I'm wondering whether to splurge into a new microphone, or camera. I'm leaning towards camera at the moment.

So, my current camera I'm looking at is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EOS_550D

Sexy eh?

Here are the specs from Wiki:

18.0 effective megapixel CMOS sensor
Full HD 1080p video recording at 30/25/24 fps
HD 720p video recording at 50 fps OR 60 fps
PAL/NTSC video output
DIGIC 4 image processor
14-bit analog to digital signal conversion
3.0-inch (76 mm) 3:2 aspect ratio LCD monitor
Live view mode
Built-in flash
Wide, selectable, nine-point AF with centre cross-type sensor extra sensitive at f/2.8
Four metering modes, using 63-zones: spot, partial, center-weighted average, and evaluative metering.
Highlight tone priority
EOS integrated cleaning system
Internal monaural microphone
sRGB and Adobe RGB colour spaces
ISO 1006,400 expandable to 12,800
Continuous drive up to 3.7 frame/s (34 images (JPEG), 6 images (RAW))
SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory card file storage
RAW and large JPEG simultaneous recording
Eye-Fi support
USB 2.0, HDMI
LP-E8 battery
Approximate weight 0.53 kg (1.2 lb) with battery and card

What are your thoughts? This will be my second camera, if I do go for this one, I also was thinking about the 60D but I was hoping for some wise words from other people with some experience in photography.

What camera do to have at the moment?

EDIT:

Nevermind - you have a 350D, right?

From everything I've heard, the 550D is a proper beast. Quite and upgrade from the 350D also.

With that in mind I can't see you using both, so have you thought of selling your 350D and adding a nice lense (or a couple of cheapies) into the mix? Perhaps go 550D body-only and grab a nice 50mm prime since you're into landscape?

Just a thought =)

That's exactly what I had in mind, and indeed I have the 350D. You had my thoughts down perfectly.

I'll be selling my originally 550 guitar amp to help fund this, hoping to get about 400 for it. My 350D will also aid a little.

My younger brother just got a 60D.  He is really enjoying it.  It is essentially the baby brother to my 7D, but since it came out after, it has many features mine does not.  It is really a great camera body.  From everything I've read, the 550D is a great camera also, it just feels a bit more plastic than either the 60D or 7D.  Either way, I don't think you can go wrong.
