I think you should check out 8bitpeoples. It has some rockin' chiptunes (chip-based synths, often from consoles, occasionally from computers). Check out the stuff from Random, Trash80, Paza, Bitshifter, glomag--well, almost all of it. There is a ton of music on 8bp and you owe it to yourself to check it out, but there are a few ones early in the catalog that definitely sound like the artist was still getting a grasp on the software (I'm looking at you, early Nullsleep). If you don't wish to sort through it all, I could recommend 10 or so selections.

On a related note, I think you should also check out she. Lain contributed to 8bitpeoples with Pioneer. He's released two purchasable albums, but the other music on that page is free, and I don't think Japanese copyright is under the effect of the RIAA (but I could be wrong :(). she is actually my most played artist. Regardless, all of you user types who like electronic should grab the 2008/chiptune superstar EP because it is fantastic. And yes, I know with a name like she, referring to him can be kind of awkward.

Lastly, though they are copyrighted, The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets are a must-have for any discerning rock and/or Lovecraft enthusiast. I highly recommend you get in touch with Toren and see if you can get permission because they are awesome and I'll have no less.

e: So it turns out you guys already know about 8bp. Still, you should play more because it is good and good things should be played.

You may want to check out the following. From what I read, these are created a compilation of independent artists who are offering their works for podcast use.

For bed music, take a look at Conelrad. Great ambient stuff with enough textures to not be boring. Really worth a look.

If I remember correctly, the composer said that the soundtrack of Epic Battle Fantasy 2-3 and Bullet Heaven 1 is also podsafe.
