The technology does exist to be fair, it's just ridiculously expensive.

I was friends with a girl who was doing her PhD at the time, now works at Google, who specialized in home-automation particularly for helping the elderly but also for general use. I had much fun playing with the iPhone app she made to interact with her office, turning on and off lights, tracking when the door would open or close and take a photo of this person and post it on Twitter, heating could be controlled too. Pretty fun stuff.
